Creating Safe Spaces for Autistic People: Why Our Drop In Sessions Matter

For many autistic people, everyday environments can feel overwhelming. Busy public spaces, unpredictable social expectations, sensory overload, and the pressure to “fit in” can make attending community groups or meeting new people incredibly challenging.

At Here to Help, we believe everyone deserves a space where they can simply be themselves. Our autism friendly drop in sessions are designed to provide exactly that: a welcoming, accepting environment where autistic people can connect with others, explore wellbeing strategies, and build confidence without fear of judgement.

Why Safe Spaces Matter

Many autistic people spend years masking their autistic traits to meet social expectations. While masking can help someone navigate certain situations, it often comes at a significant emotional cost, contributing to anxiety, exhaustion, loneliness, and reduced wellbeing.

A safe environment is about much more than having a quiet room. It means creating a space where people feel accepted, understood, and respected.

When autistic people know they do not have to explain themselves or hide who they are, they are more likely to:

  • Build meaningful relationships.
  • Develop confidence in social situations.
  • Share experiences without fear of judgement.
  • Learn new coping strategies.
  • Improve their emotional wellbeing.
  • Feel a genuine sense of belonging.

For many, this sense of belonging can be life changing.

What Happens at Our Drop In Sessions?

Our drop in sessions provide a relaxed, supportive environment where there is no pressure to participate in a particular way. Whether someone enjoys chatting with others, taking part in activities, or simply sitting quietly until they feel comfortable, everyone is welcome.

Sessions may include:

  • Informal conversations with other autistic people.
  • Wellbeing and emotional awareness activities.
  • Creative and practical activities.
  • Opportunities to learn self help strategies.
  • Information about local services and support.
  • Time to socialise at each person’s own pace.

Our team understands autism and recognises that every individual communicates and engages differently. We focus on creating a calm, respectful atmosphere where everyone can participate in a way that feels right for them.

Building Confidence Through Community

Isolation is something many autistic people tell us they experience. Finding people with similar experiences can make a huge difference.

Over time, we often see participants become more confident, begin conversations they may never have initiated before, and discover practical ways to manage everyday challenges.

Just as importantly, they realise they are not alone.

Having a community that understands your experiences can reduce feelings of isolation and improve overall wellbeing.

More Than a Drop In

Our sessions are about more than meeting people for a few hours each month. They provide opportunities to develop self understanding, improve wellbeing, and build lasting connections.

Every smile, conversation, and shared experience helps create a community where autistic people know they belong.

When someone says they have finally found a place where they feel accepted, we know we are doing something meaningful.
